I love the sound of the Dobro. I would like to purchse music of who you consider the top players or if not solo, part of a group where drobro has leads.

Try Jerry Douglas. You can find him on Allison Krause and Union Station CDs. Jerry is the master of the dobro.

Thanks Dave,
Does he have any solo work?

I am pretty sure he does Bob but I'm afraid I don't know the titles of any of them. Just look for anything that has his name on it and you won't be disappointed.

Well, from my own collection:-

Of Jerry's solo stuff try "Slide Rule", "Skip Hop & Wobble", "Restless on the Farm". As well as his playing with Alison Krauss he has some fine playing on Jorma Kaukonen's "Blue Country Heart".

Rob Ickes is also a great player - "Hard Times", "Slide City". Some of the later stuff released under his own name is too jazzy for my taste, but for outstanding musicianship by all three players in the band try the recent album by Three Ring Circle called - yes, you've guessed it, "Three Ring Circle". Mind bogglingly good.

Sally van Meter - "All In Good Time" (if you can still get it). Sally took Jerry's place when Jorma toured the album.

Ivan Rosenberg - "Back to the Pasture", "Ashes and Coals"

If it's still available, Gene Wooten's album "Don't Look Now" has some great playing on it.

Mike Auldridge is another really good player but I haven't got any of his solo stuff. However the album "Tone Poems III" he made with Bob Brozman and Dave Grisman is highly recommended. The photo booklet of reso guitar porn that comes with it is worth the price alone.

There is one that is just called "The Great Dobro Sessions" that is very good. It has Jerry Douglas, Mike Aldridge, and others.

There is a song called "Red Rag Top". Listening to that got me interested in a Dobro sound. I don't have a clue who did it?

Well, Jerry D. of course, Rob Ikes with Blue Highway, My favorite new young player is Todd Livingston down in Boulder CO - you can hear him on the first Hit and Run Bluegrass CD which is absolutely smokin! Then of course, there's Uncle Josh Graves who played with Flatt and Scruggs, and was arguably the Jimi Hendrix of Dobro - he completely changed the way people played the instrument...

For comparison purposes, where do you rate the brunette banjo player of Dixie Chicks as far as a Dobro player?
